After 5 years of coming to Reno – I can remember only one day where the light just did amazing things. As we drove to the field this morning – we could see some early glow on the horizon. The excitement level increased as we also started to see some clouds in the sky. Not low on horizon which would ruin any sunrise but higher up it the sky and they were already turning a slight pink.

Since we knew there would not be any staged aircraft on the ramp this morning we had decided to hit the vintage airplane area again. We knew that more would be arriving late the evening before. It would also mean that only a few people would brave the 40 degree morning in the predawn so it would be easy to avoid those bright green vests that somehow creep into your photos.

We got to the far end of the field where all the vintage planes are just in to also discover that our Military had arrived with some modern warplanes including F15’s and the F22 Raptor. I had shot those planes before but not with the sky that was developing.

The colors were popping and the sky was on fire. A rare opportunity this time of year when the skys are generally cloudless. As the morning went on – the light just kept getting better and better. I have only experienced this twice in all my trips to Reno. The vintage planes could wait just a little bit while we shot the Military hardware.

Still plenty of time to shoot the vintage planes – and to reshoot some stuff from the day before – but now with a spectacular sky.

Be sure to visit Bill Fortney’s blog today – His shots (same subjects) are incredible and so different. Link to his site in on my “Links” page. Proves that you can shoot side by side and come up with different shots.

Just too many to show so here is a gallery with todays best:
